For the online class "Assessment in E-Learning" offered through UW Stout, a one module class has been designed that has four objectives. Objectives, activities and assessments were designed to create an online class "Learning Excel Basics by Creating an Electronic Gradebook." The goal for this professional development course is to train teachers in basic Excel functions by creating an electronic gradebook. The class will run for four weeks. At the completion of this class learners will take with them a basic understand of how excel works and an electronic gradebook to use in their class.
This class was designed using the Backward Design Process. (Wiggins, McTighe, 2005) Desired results were first identified that included goals and objectives. Next was to determine acceptable evidence to determine if students have attained desired understanding. Choosing the online assessment tools and rubrics became a very import part of this process. Both formative and summative assessments were chosen to assess student achievement. The last step was planning the learning experiences/activities and instruction to meet all of the class objectives. Activities were designed to equip students with the needed knowledge and skills. (Wiggins, McTighe, 2005)
This is an introductory online class for teachers who want to learn Excel. Excel is a spreadsheet program that is part of Microsoft Office, that enables the user to work with numerical and text information in a lot of different ways. Excel is an electronic spreadsheet application designed to replace using pencil/paper and calculators. A spreadsheet is a grid of rows and columns containing numbers, text and formulas. It is used to gather, organize and summarize data. Excel can be used to perform calculations, track attendance, class checklists, data collection, create graphs and electronic gradebooks. This class could be used for Professional Development. This class will teach learners how to use Excel and how to utilize the many tools available in Excel. There will be a variety of activities to help learn how to use this exciting program.

Course Description
This professional development online course will provide instruction for learning to use the basic features of Excel. You will learn how create a basic spreadsheet and then turn it into an electronic gradebook by formatting and adding formulas. From workbook creation and navigation to text and numerical data entry, you will see how easy it is to use Excel and how this software can help you get organized in a classroom! Learned skills will be reinforced with a series of readings, video, practice exercises, and assessments. You will learn Excel Basics as you create a useable tool for your class! All of this and more for the beginner level participant.
This online class could be taught in Clinton Public School District, which has 3 schools, elementary, middle and high school. This could be offered as a Professional Development Class online for PDP's. There are roughly 140 teachers and 2000 students K-12 --Clinton, MA.

Student (Learner) Audience
New or experienced teachers, paraprofessionals (appropriate for all levels, elementary, middle and high school) as well as anybody who would like to learn how to use Excel in the classroom. This course is for participants with little or no prior usage of Excel.
This type of professional development class would be offered to anybody who wanted to learn the software Excel, the twist on this class is that the learner would be learning excel as they create a product to take back to class with them. This class would focus on the basic, beginning level and work up to advanced features (function and formulas). Open for the beginner or advanced computer user that would help to bring in a variety of students and create a discussion board with a variety of levels. A pre-class survey has been created to assess participants computer experience and their current use of technology.
