Summary on Assessment
For the proposed professional development online course, Basic Excel, assessment tools will be used to gain insight into what participants have learned. Mastering each step along the way will facilitate a better understanding of the program. Each section has specific pieces of assessments to guide comprehension.
After objectives were formed, formative and summative assessments were created. The formative assessment provides many opportunities for instant feedback; and they are used to help students see what they have learned and what they need to work on to master a certain concept. The assessments in this course have been created using this model. Without formative assessment there is little value in the activity. Introducing the rubric/exemplar before assignments provides students an opportunity to see the requirements and will enhances the student's understanding of expectations. Letting online students know what the assessment piece is before they begin the assignment creates a better finished product. It's important to remember that there is communication between both the teacher and student. Being able to edit/redo an assignment will enrich the learning experience. In the proposed online class, many small formative assessments along the way will better prepare the student for the summative assessment. Summative assessments are designed to measure mastery of the activity/skill. It is a measure of learning at a specific point, much like a final exam, or state tests. The creation of the gradebook and how to manual, is the summative assessment to be scored with a rubric.
In conclusion, this final product has incorporated all of the necessary tools needed to facilitate an online class. The connection between the goal, objectives, and assessments will make a great starting point for teaching an online course. This document demonstrates how important the assessment piece really is. The variety of assessments can be used for so many different learning styles. The audience for this proposed online class is made up of a diverse population. This online class has been created to meet the needs of all types of learners.
Creating this final exam has taught me a lot along the way. From writing solid objectives, to designing activities and choosing the right assessment piece, I feel confident to actually give this online class a try! I have taught Professional Development classes to teachers in the past, but teaching online presents another challenge!
